Greenery Day (みどりの日, Midori no Hi) falls on Monday, May 4, 2026 — right in the middle of Golden Week, Japan’s longest holiday stretch. Combined with the surrounding holidays and weekend, most workers get a solid block of consecutive days off.

If you’re living in Japan or planning to be here during Golden Week, here’s what Greenery Day means for your schedule, your commute, and what you can actually do with the day.

What Is Greenery Day?

Greenery Day is a national holiday dedicated to appreciating nature and being thankful for its blessings. The official purpose, as stated in Japan’s Public Holiday Law, is:

自然にしたしむとともにその恩恵に感謝し、豊かな心をはぐくむ日
A day to commune with nature, be grateful for its blessings, and cultivate a rich spirit.

简史

Greenery Day has an unusual backstory. It didn’t always fall on May 4:

  • Before 1989: May 4 was simply a filler holiday — a “sandwiched day” (国民の休日) between two other public holidays, with no name or meaning of its own.
  • 1989–2006: When Emperor Shōwa passed away in 1989, his birthday (April 29) was renamed from “Emperor’s Birthday” to “Greenery Day.” The name reflected his well-known love of plants and botanical research. Meanwhile, the Emperor’s Birthday holiday shifted to December 23 for Emperor Akihito.
  • 2007–present: April 29 was renamed again to Showa Day, and Greenery Day was moved to its current date of May 4.

So Greenery Day is essentially a holiday that has been relocated and repurposed — but its connection to nature has remained constant.

How Greenery Day Affects Daily Life in Japan

What’s Open and Closed

  • Government offices, banks, post offices: Closed.
  • Supermarkets, convenience stores: Open as usual.
  • Shopping malls and department stores: Open, often with extended hours or seasonal sales.
  • Restaurants and cafés: Generally open, especially in tourist areas. Expect longer wait times.
  • Hospitals and clinics: Regular clinics closed. Emergency services available.

交通运输

Trains and buses run on holiday schedules — check your line’s timetable in advance. Shinkansen and express trains will be extremely crowded during Golden Week, especially on outbound and return travel days. If you’re traveling long distance, reserve seats well ahead of time.

Garbage Collection

Most municipalities suspend collection on public holidays. Check your local schedule — pickups may shift by a day during Golden Week.

Things to Do on Greenery Day

Since the holiday is about appreciating nature, many parks and botanical gardens offer free or discounted admission on May 4. Some well-known options:

  • 新宿御苑 (Tokyo) — Free admission on Greenery Day. One of Tokyo’s best spots for green space, with Japanese, English, and French-style gardens.
  • National parks across Japan — Many waive entrance fees for the day.
  • Local botanical gardens and nature centers — Check your prefecture’s website for Greenery Day specials.

Beyond free entry, May is one of the most comfortable months weather-wise in most of Japan — warm days, mild evenings, and fresh greenery everywhere. It’s a genuinely good day to be outside.

Greenery Day Within Golden Week

Golden Week is a cluster of four public holidays in late April and early May. Here’s how they connect in 2026:

日期Day节假日
4 月 29 日Wednesday昭和日
5 月 3 日Sunday宪法纪念日
5 月 4 日Monday绿化日
5 月 5 日TuesdayChildren’s Day (こどもの日)
May 6WednesdaySubstitute holiday for Constitution Memorial Day

With Constitution Memorial Day falling on a Sunday, its substitute holiday shifts to Wednesday, May 6 — meaning May 3 through May 6 is a four-day block of holidays. Many companies close for the entire stretch from April 29 onward, giving workers up to 8 consecutive days off depending on how they handle the April 30–May 1 gap.

If you’re new to Japan, Golden Week will be one of the first times you notice how significantly public holidays affect the rhythm of daily life — from packed train stations to quieter offices. For tips on making the most of the break, see our Golden Week 2026 guide.
