- 1989–2006: When Emperor Shōwa passed away in 1989, his birthday (April 29) was renamed from “Emperor’s Birthday” to “Greenery Day.” The name reflected his well-known love of plants and botanical research. Meanwhile, the Emperor’s Birthday holiday shifted to December 23 for Emperor Akihito.
- 2007–present: April 29 was renamed again to Showa Day, and Greenery Day was moved to its current date of May 4.
